The Alice Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at 2701 E. Main St., Walmart, early Saturday morning.
Officers and EMS were dispatched to the scene to find that 25-year-old Mark Esparza had suffered a gunshot wound to the left calf.
Alice Police Department Lt. Luis Barrera said multiple shots were fired into the vehicle where Esparza was sitting.
“This is still an ongoing investigation,” Lt. Barrera said. “We have few details, but are putting the picture together rather quickly. What we know is that as Esparza sat in his vehicle, the suspect(s) began shooting and fired seven shots into Esparza’s vehicle. Esparza was shot in the left calf.”
Eyewitnesses said Esparza was pulled from his vehicle and taken inside Walmart towards the produce section. Officials said Esparza was taken by HALO-Flight from the scene and transported to CHRISTUS Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi.
“Currently, we are attempting to look at the surveillance footage from the cameras,” Lt. Barrera said. “Our investigators are looking into possible motives, including a possible connection to a criminal mischief incident that occurred on Friday afternoon involving the victim’s girlfriend.”
That criminal mischief incident took place at the Alician Manor apartments and police are investigating a possible motive as a result of that incident.
Officials at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital have listed Esparza in stable condition.
