Alice Mayor Grace Saenz-Lopez submitted a letter of resignation late Friday to be effective at midnight. The resignation follows the recent submission of a recall petition for the mayor and a recent vote of no confidence from the Alice City Council.

Her letter:

To My Fellow Citizens,

I want to thank the Citizens of Alice for their support over my many years as their Mayor and as a City

Council Member. I am proud to have met so many wonderful people and to have worked with so many

dedicated employees. I am most proud, however, to have served the greatest citizens in the world; the

Citizens of Alice.

I have always taken the leadership with which you entrusted me very seriously. We have accomplished

many great things together, including great strides in economic development and public safety. We

passed and have begun work on our $9.6 million bond project. We have also worked hard for our

children and began this year taking new steps to better serve our Senior Citizens. As your Mayor, fiscal

responsibility has always been a priority for me. We lowered, not only the tax rate this year, but

property taxes as well.

I know these past few weeks have been difficult for all of us, including my husband, my sister, and the

Gutierrez Family as well. On Monday the courts will decide the fate of Panchito. I do not know what

they will decide, but I can tell you that I did at the time what I thought was best for Panchito and what I

felt was right in my heart.

Although I wish to continue as your Mayor and finish the projects we started, I do not want the

taxpayers to shoulder the cost and division of continuing to pursue a special election. The expense and

discord of a special election would go against everything I have fought for as your Mayor.

In closing, I am sorry for the division that the events of these last few weeks have caused. It was never

my intent to bring any negative exposure to our City. I did not make any statements nor did I seek any

publicity. I only wanted to continue forward. I want to again thank you for your prayers and the many

great years you have given me. Effective tonight, Friday, February 1, 2008, at twelve midnight, I will

effectively resign my position as Mayor of the City of Alice. I hope you will continue to support our

employees, including our City Manager. God bless you, and remember, ALICE is Buena Gente.

Mayor Grace Saenz-Lopez
