Rumbo Al’Anacua, a vocal and guitar duet from Brownsville, presented “Cultura Con Cancion” as an introduction to National Poetry Month at Ben Bolt High School on Tuesday.

“This was a really good cultural experience for us,” high school senior Felipe Guerra, said.

“The duet’s original poetry made us recognize that poetry can be created from our own personal experiences.”

Sponsored by Texas Commission on the Arts and the high school library, Jose and Rosa Perez, members of the duet, performed musica ranchera, blues and folk music, including original compositions.

As self-taught musicians, their interpretation of music evokes a rustic style that speaks of a “voces y guitarras” heritage presented with commentary on the Mexican-American experience in South Texas.

Following the presentation, the duet held a brief question and answer session.
