An early morning traffic stop on Reynolds Street turned into a brief foot pursuit Wednesday morning, and ended in the arrest of an Alice man and the seizure of a marijuana and cocaine.

According to Alice Police Department reports, officers initiated a traffic stop on a brown pickup truck shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of South Reynolds Street.

As officers approached the truck, they reportedly noticed a strong smell of marijuana and asked the driver to exit the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Ruben Contreras, 38, exited the vehicle, but reportedly began running north on Wright Street before officers could question him.

According to the report, after a brief foot pursuit several officers were able to catch Contreras and wrestle him to the ground. Contreras allegedly resisted arrest by struggling with the officers, but was eventually restrained and taken into custody.

A search of the pickup truck reportedly revealed several marijuana seeds, plastic bags and a small amount of marijuana. Officers also reportedly discovered four bundles of marijuana weighing a total of 151 grams and a small amount of cocaine in Contreras' pockets, as well as more than $4,000 in cash.

Contreras was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana more than four ounces, evading arrest and resisting arrest. He was transported to the Jim Wells County jail and was later released on $2,000 bond.
