Only five days after the release of the composites of two suspects believed to be connected to the first county homicide of the year, phone call leads are coming in, sheriff officials said.

"We got a call out of Houston (Tuesday) morning, but the majority are from the area," said Sgt. Gino Martinez, an investigator with the Jim Wells Sheriff's Department. "We've gotten several calls, about five or six."

Martinez said of the six calls, the callers were from Houston, Alice, San Diego and one from Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers. He said that when the call is from the area, they send out a unit to investigate the tip and "check out the person."

Only six days into 2007, the first county homicide of the year resulted with Jose Pepe Gallegos being gunned down in his residence on Loma Linda Estates subdivision off County Road 162, about four miles east of San Diego.

Sketches of two suspects, believed to be involved with the Jan. 6 were drafted from witness accounts and released on Friday.

The two suspects are said to be Hispanic.

One, which was seen with a hood over the head, is believed to have dark skin, the other a bald-headed man, is reportedly light skinned, sheriff officials said.

According to witnesses, the men fled the scene after the shooting in a gray or silver truck, sheriff officials said.

Jim Wells County Sheriff's Officials are asking the public for help in the investigation. Individuals with information about the shooting can contact an investigator at the Jim Wells County sheriff's department at 668-0341.
