The Benavides High School Band received all first division ratings from the judges Tuesday during the sight reading portion of their Region 5 concert and sight reading competition.

According to a letter by Dionicio Martinez, band director for Benavides, the Eagle Band received mixed scores during the concert portion of the competition – 3, 2, 3 – because of nerves.

The letter says the students nerves got the best of them, but for the sight reading portion, the musicians were relaxed and ready to go.

“The judges were amazed at the performance of our band,” Martinez said. “Being that they have never competed in this type of competition, they did extremely well. They hit one out of the park. Congratulations Eagle Band! ”

After their performance, the Eagle Band received a score of 1 from all three judges, giving them a perfect score on sight reading.
