By a margin of 257 votes, Oswald “Wally” Alanis defeated his opponent  J.C. Perez III in the Precinct 3 Commissioner special election Tuesday.

“I’m a happy camper,” said Alanis as he was surrounded by his family and friends at his Orange Grove home Tuesday evening. “I always thank Jesus Christ first, and I want to commend J.C. Perez for his work and for a long battle. I thank all of my constituents and my family and friends. Everybody had a big influence in this election.”

Just under two hours after the polls closed Tuesday, the unofficial results were in with total votes of 823 for Alanis and 566 for Perez. The first voting box came in at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday to the Jim Wells County Courthouse and all of the five precinct boxes were in by about 8 p.m.

Alanis received 59.25 percent of the votes, with Perez receiving 40.75 percent of the votes.

The breakdown included 89 votes for absentee, 503 votes during early voting and 797 voted on election day Tuesday.

Voter turnout was 21 percent of the total 6,549 registered voters in Precinct 3.

Perez could not be reached for comment.
