Organizing full-length production was quite a task

For those citizens looking for a little culture in their life, and perhaps a little absurdity, the Alice High School Drama Club will hold four performances this weekend of their new full length play "The Skin of Our Teeth" by Thornton Wilder.

It's been several years since the club has performed a full-length production, which nears two hours in length, but the students say they were up to the task.

Since September, the members have been scurrying like busy bees, building sets and preparing for the demands of Wilder's production, which will include multi-media clips, live remote broadcasts and a fair amount of audience participation.

"It's extremely absurd," junior Sara Fraizer said. "And a whole lot of hard work,"

Chelsea Andersen, one of the leads in the play, said it's the type of performance most people in Alice are not used to seeing.

"It's both a comedy and a drama," Chelsea said, "but with a hidden message."

Junior Andrew Garza said the message of the play is sugar coated, which added a lot to the description, but also to the confusion.

Sara said one of the biggest difficulties the club faced this year was just getting everyone together at the same time to get things done.

With other extra-curricular activities and their studies, along with the occasional wave of student illnesses, getting 24 students to be in one place at one time was daunting, but as an organization, the drama club is used to flying by the seat of their pants.

The drama club has received both national and international acclaim in recent months, receiving accolades for their performances this summer at the University of Nebraska, and being featured in an international dramatics magazine.

The money raised through ticket sales will help club members fund their trip to New York City this year, and allow them to make a return to the international conference at the University of Nebraska.

Tickets are $5 at the door, and opening night is this evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the AHS Theatre for the Performing Arts.
