Precinct officials with the Jim Wells County Democratic Party met Wednesday and selected Yolanda Monsevais as the interim-chairperson of the local party.

The selection came one week after former chairman Guadalupe "Lupe" Martinez filed a letter of resignation with the party.

Martinez's resignation coincided with the announcement of his candidacy for the position of Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace.

Monsevais has served as the secretary of the Jim Wells County Democratic Party since 1967, and has served under five chairpersons.

"I'll be trying to work out the duties of the county chair," Monsevais said. "I've already done them as a secretary, so that won't be too much of a problem for me, but I will continue working at it."

Monsevais was one of two individuals nominated for the position of interim-party chair Wednesday.

Alice City Council member Dorella Elizondo was also nominated, but Monsevais was selected in a 10-2 vote.

The party has not yet appointed a replacement for Monsevais in the position of party secretary.

Monsevais will serve out Martinez's unexpired term, which runs through the March 2008 election.

"I'm willing to work for everybody for the Democrats and get them (elected)," Monsevais said.
