Blunt head trauma is the preliminary cause of death released by the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Monday after conducting an autopsy on a Victoria native who died June 18 at a drilling site near Freer.

Stefanie Wiser, an official with the examiner's office, said Dr. Ray Fernandez ruled in his preliminary report the death as accidental.

The office is still awaiting the results of a toxicology report, which will take four to six weeks to complete, she said.

David Goehring, 24, was on site sometime after 7:30 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Helmerich and Payne, the company in charge of the site have not released details on the nature of the accident.

H and P conducted its own investigation last week at the site, along with an independent investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

H and P Legal Department spokesman Steven Mackey did not return calls on Monday for an update on the investigation.
