The City of Alice is gearing up for its May elections, with a number of election-related items on the agenda for Monday's city council meeting.

In order to comply with recently changed state law, the council is scheduled to authorize holding a joint election with the Alice Independent School District and to authorize the interim-city manager to enter into any necessary agreements connected with the issue.

The council will also consider and act upon a proposed agreement authorizing the City of Alice to enter into an election agreement with Jim Wells County to administer the May 12 election for the city of Alice and AISD, if an election administrator is hired by Jim Wells County, and to authorize the city manager to enter into any necessary agreements.

The council is also scheduled to consider and act upon ordering the election for mayor and the four council seats.

Other election items include the following:

Consider and act upon an ordinance calling a bond election. Consider and act upon order of special election for the purpose of voting for or against the proposition: "Adoption of the police officers' civil service law." Consider and act upon an ordinance appointing presiding and alternate election judges and issuance of a notice of election for the May 12, 2007 election.

Some other items on Monday's agenda include:

Conduct a public hearing and consider and act upon a resolution approving a variance to sell beer and wine within 300 feet of a public or private school, church, hospital, daycare or child care facility. Location for sale is 301 N. Johnson Street, being the 140' x 150', F/B 77, Unrecorded Noonan Tract, Alice Farm Lots Addition. Hear presentation from Mike Smith, Chamber Executive Vice President and Juan Navejar, Marketing/Sales, regarding the Alice Convention and Visitors Bureau 2006 Fourth Quarter Report and Proposed Budget. Consider and act upon a partial funding request from the Alice Boys and Girls Club for a new facility at $25,000 per year for four years. Consider and act upon appointments to fill vacancies to City of Alice boards, commissions and committees. Consider and act upon entering into an agreement for utility audit services and authorizing city manager to execute consulting agreement. Hear presentation by Anna Marquez, director of finance, regarding quarterly investment report for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2006. Consider and act upon adopting a resolution in support of the efforts of the Bi-National Texas-Tamaulipas Economic Alliance. The council may enter into executive session to discuss the following pursuant to Texas Government Code Section 551.074: Personnel Related Matters - Compensation Rate of Interim City Manager. Return to open session and take any action necessary as a result of discussions in preceding Agenda Item No. 21; pursuant to Texas Government Code Section 551.074: Personnel Related Matters - Compensation Rate of Interim City Manager.

The city council meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the city council chambers of Alice City Hall. and is open to the public.
