Multiple media sources state alcohol sales and consumption are on the rise through the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
An article published by the Corpus Christi Caller Times on April 8, 2020, states one in five Texans admits to drinking during work hours, while working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gov. Greg Abbott issued a waiver on March 18, 2020, temporarily allowing restaurants to deliver alcohol during this pandemic.
More alcohol being consumed at home and easier to get, allows for easier accessibility for minors.
Project H.O.P.E. (Health Outreach Prevention Education) is a State Funded Community Coalition addressing the misuse of alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs throughout the Coastal Bend.
Project H.O.P.E is currently kicking off a mobilization campaign called Rethink the Drink. With alcohol more accessible, Rethink the Drink is working to increase community awareness regarding underage drinking and remind the community it is illegal to provide alcohol to a person under the age of 21.
Project H.O.P.E. is teaming up with several restaurants in the Coastal Bend to provide educational literature about Social Hosting and Underage Drinking to customers who order alcohol. Participating restaurants include: 19th Hole in Alice, Los Cabos Mexican Bar & Grill in Kingsville, and Pizza Parlor in Kingsville.
Project H.O.P.E. focuses on substance misuse prevention education, concentrating on three of the State’s prevention priorities; one of the priorities is Underage Drinking. According to the Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol
Use (TSS) report in 2018, almost half (46.9%) of the surveyed students between 7th and 12th grade, stated it would be “somewhat easy” and “very easy” to get alcohol.
