Jim Wells County Judge Juan Rodriguez confirmed Friday that a 25-year-old woman is the second positive Coronavirus (COVID-19) case for the county.
City of Alice Mayor Jolene Vanover confirmed that the woman is from Alice and is the first case for the city.
"The time has come. I come to you with great sadness in my heart. As the (Texas) governor said three weeks ago ’It wasn’t a matter of if. It was a matter of when.’ The day is to today," she said. "The City of Alice’s Emergency Management Director, Emergency Management Coordinator and City Manager were made aware a few minutes ago from Region 11 Department of State Health Services and the Texas Division of Emergency management of a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the City of Alice."
The woman "is under doctor’s care at this time. It is unknown at this time if the case is travel related or community spread," Vanover said. "City of Alice and County officials are all working together to keep this case isolated and are also working closely with the state to prevent any additional cases. It is our understanding that the case is being handled by the resident’s physician and the Texas Department of State Health Services."
Officials are working with the State to determine were the woman had been over the last few weeks and if the case is travel or community related. As of Tuesday, that information had not been released to the city.
"Stay calm, stay at home, stay safe," Vanover said.
