More than $235,000 was seized in a traffic stop on Tuesday. Deputies arrested 60-year-old Marina Espinosa Oceguera, a Mexican national, in connection with the seizure.
According to Jim Wells County Sheriff officials, Oceguera was driving a Volkswagen passenger car southbound on Highway 281 near County Road 211.
When deputies approached the vehicle they observed Oceguera, two adult women and a child under the age of 10. A roadside interview was conducted with the occupants and deputies believed they had reasonable suspicion to search the vehicle.
Oceguera gave deputies consent to search the vehicle. Using the handheld x-ray machine deputies discovered two large bundles of United States currency that totaled $235,085, sheriff officials said. The bundles were vacuum-sealed, wrapped in duct tape, foil and dryer sheets.
Oceguera was booked into the JWC jail. She was charged with money laundering and unlawful use of a criminal instrument, both felonies. She has a bond of $52,000.
The other two women and the child were released. The vehicle was impounded.
The Drug Enforcement Administration assisted in the case. The case is still under investigation.
