SANDIA - An elderly man died on Saturday, Jan. 11 from injuries he sustained in a vehicle accident that occurred several days before.
The Department of Public Safety is investigating the single vehicle-fatality crash that claimed the life of 82-year-old Juan Cornejo Jr.
According to Sgt. Nathan Brandley, the accident occurred on Dec. 14 at approximately 12:05 p.m., on County Road 369, approximately 12 miles west of Sandia.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Ford Expedition SUV driven by Cornejo was traveling west on CR 369, and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of CR 369 and Farm-to-Market 534.
Cornejo went through the intersection and veered off the roadway to the right of FM 534 and struck a tree, according to Sgt. Brandley.
The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was air lifted by Halo to Christus Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi with injuries.
DPS Troopers are further investigating the fatal crash.
