An accident on Farm-to-Market 625 Monday afternoon sent one man to the hospital after he attempted to avoid police.

According to Alice Police Chief Aniceto "Cheto" Perez, Alice police and Department of Public Safety troopers were watching Guillermo Cavazos Jr. in a moving surveillance that began inside the City of Alice. The officers in an unmarked unit were to conduct a traffic stop. When the officers got out of their vehicle to make contact with Cavazos, Cavazos drove off.

The officers didn't ensue in a chase because of the county road dust which made visibility difficult. When police turned the corner on Farm-to-Market 625 they observed Cavazos' vehicle in the brush. According to Perez, Cavazos lost control of his vehicle and ran into the brush.

K9 unit and DPS helicopter were called to assist in locating Cavazos. Cavazos was found and taken to the hospital for medical clearance.

Law enforcement believed Cavazos had three warrants, but they could not confirm the warrants.

According to Perez, Cavazos was to be admitted to the hospital and transported to a hospital in Corpus Christi for lower back trauma. He was released to the hospital.

Cavazos walked out of the hospital after police left.
