The legacy of a man is measured by the lives he touched through compassion and generosity. Wednesday night Rotarians honored a fellow Rotarian who made an impact not only in their lives, but also in the Alice community.
A tribute to the legacy of the late William "Bill" Findley Jr. gave his friends, family and fellow Rotarians a chance to remember Findley through his love of life, his love of people and his sense of humor.
"Bill Findley was at his best when he was helping someone else. He didn't want anyone to know, he didn't want anyone to recognize him in the papers...," said Joe Ash, Alice Rotarian and long time friend of Findley. "Bill Findley was Mr. Service Above Self."
Findley was the founder and CEO of Findley Engineering Service Company (FESCO). He passed away in August of 2018 at the age of 96.
He had been a Rotarian since 1971. He held several positions and was the fundraising “genius.”
He had lunch every Wednesday with his fellow Rotarians at the Alice Country Club. Those same Rotarians wanted to continue honoring the man who touched their hearts. They decided that they would host a memorial dinner in his honor with the proceeds going towards a scholarship in his name.
One-by-one Rotarians remembered Findley. They thanked his family for allowing them to share such a wonderful man and humanitarian. Each remembering how they met him before they were Rotarians and the worked they did together as Rotarians.
"(This was) a great event that represented my grandpa very well for the things he's done. The people of Rotary meant the world to him...In the summer months when I was out of school, if it was a Wednesday he'd bring us to (Rotary) where we met a lot of great people who were here today," said Travis Findley, Bill Findley's grandson. "He was the guy that always wanted to help everybody and wanted to brighten up the room. If you were having a bad day, he'd make you feel better. His motto in life was always 'It doesn't matter what your job is, be the best at it. We miss him dearly.'"
Bill Findley's family was honored with a proclamation by the City of Alice Mayor Jolene Vanover. The family also received a Paul Harris Award on behalf of Bill Findley. In his lifetime, Bill Findley received four Paul Harris Awards; one of the greatest and highest awards in Rotary.
"He was a fine man and we're glad to see that his legacy will live on through a Rotary Scholarship Fund," said Justin Findley, Bill Findley's grandson.
