Teachers and other Alice Independent School District employees will see a pay increase in the next school year after school board members recently voted to approve the salary increases.
The increase will go into effect for the 2019-2020 school year. The new pay for teachers will increase from $40,000 to $44,000.
“We wanted to do it early because we are in the recruiting season and we want to retain our teachers as well,” said AISD Superintendent Dr. Carl Scarbrough.
Dr. Scarbrough and a workforce task force looked at the budget thoroughly to make sure that an increase was possible. School board members received five options with pay increases to look at and unanimously voted.
Auxiliary, maintenance and clerks pay will also receive a 50-cent an hour increase and depending on the number of days worked, custodians pay raises will range from over $700-900 annually.
“(We'll) be more competitive. Our teachers and staff work very hard and they deserve to have a competitive pay scale,” Dr. Scarbrough stated. “Surrounding school districts compete for quality teachers and staff. When you look at where we’re going to be, it really puts us in a better position, in a more competitive position.”
If the state comes back in the summer with more money for school districts, Dr. Scarbrough and his staff will visit the idea of another pay increase.
