FREER - A three-vehicle accident on Highway 59  approximately six miles northeast of Freer on Friday morning left a 52-year-old Laredo man dead and sent three others to the hospital.

According to Sgt. Nathan Brandley with the Department of Public Safety, a 2006 Land Rover was traveling west as a 2013 Ford F250 and a 2018 Chevy Silverado were traveling east. The two pickup trucks reached a passing zone on the highway when the Ford F250 moved into the passing lane in an attempt to pass the Silverado. The Land Rover moved into the Ford F250's lane and struck it head-on.

The Land Rover struck the Chevy Silverado as it spun.

The Ford F250 rolled across the westbound lane, landed upright in a ditch and caught fire, Brandley said.

Arturo Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Josie Fernandez.

The rainy weather may have been a factor in the accident.

According to Brandley, the drivers and the passenger of the other two vehicles were taken to the hospital.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Land Rover. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
