SAN DIEGO – Four people from Roma were arrested in connection with a fatal accident that occurred near Concepcion on March 24.
According to Duval County Sheriff Romeo Ramirez, Jose Refugio Torres, 22, Erasmo Garcia III, 17, Julia Isairis Torres, 33, and 29-year-old Israel Torres Jr. were booked into the Duval County jail Tuesday, April 2.
A joint investigation led by the Duval County Sheriff’s Office Investigators with the assistance of Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division, Texas Rangers, United States Border Patrol of Freer, Hebbronville and Falfurrias Sectors, Brooks County Sheriff’s Investigators, Homeland Security Investigators and the 229th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Investigators led to the arrests.
Back in March, a Duval County Sheriff's deputy attempted to pullover a black SUV on Farm-to-Market 339 that was filled with several undocumented immigrants. The driver of the SUV turned onto a County Road 245 where he attempted to lose the deputy.
The driver of the SUV lost control and flipped. Several individuals were ejected from the SUV. One male was pinned inside the vehicle.
Firefighters with the San Diego Fire Department were called to the scene to remove one of the deceased individuals from the vehicle.
Two men and two female were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men and two other females were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The suspects were charged with smuggling of persons causing death or serious bodily injury, a first degree felony, and engaging in organized criminal activity. Other charges are pending for their suspected participation in criminal activity.
