SAN DIEGO – San Diego Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Samuel Bueno recently announced his retirement after more than two decades in the education field.

“I have reached 30 years of public service, military and education combined,” Dr. Bueno wrote in his retirement letter to the district. “With much deliberation I have decided to retire from the field of education to pursue other career interests...”

Bueno received his bachelors degree from Southern Illinois University and his masters and doctorate degree from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Dr. Bueno finished a six-year tour in the United States Navy before he joined Harlandale ISD in 1995 as a bilingual immersion second grade teacher. He taught at Alice ISD for four years. In 2001, officials at SDISD “tapped me to be their next elementary principal.”

His educational career at SDISD includes 18 years as an administrator. He has held the principal positions at all three campuses in the district. By 2013, school board members selected Dr. Bueno as the superintendent.

“Over those years I have been blessed to work with many talented and dedicated administrators, teachers and support staff. Doing what is, 'best for kids,' knowing that I was a catalyst for student success, is what I will miss the most,” Dr. Bueno stated.

Dr. Bueno's achievements at the district are notable not only in academics but in the safety of students and the faculty.

Since the inception of the STAAR accountability, SDISD students continue to achieve a high level as a district and have “met standard” every year while earning numerous distinctions. In addition, Dr. Bueno spearheaded the effort to increase course offerings for CTE, dual enrollment and establish an Early College High School designation; continued to improve high school and stadium facilities; added sidewalks; improved handicap parking; adopted district pay scale for all employees; established the Nature and Fitness Trail that is open to the community; partnered with the City of San Diego to provide a school resource officer for the district.

Dr. Bueno's retirement will be effective on June 30. He will remain in the City of San Diego as he pursues other career endeavors.
