SAN DIEGO - Pearl Garcia won a $200 scholarship from the San Diego Rotary Club for winning the club's 4-way speech contest.

On Tuesday, Garcia stood before the organization and spoke about mental health, suicide and school shootings.

Participants in the 4-way speech have five to seven minutes to present a speech in a certain topic that answers four questions - Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concern?

The purpose of the contest is to help youth, Rotarians and the community at-large to completely understand, encourage, and foster the principles of Rotary and its motto of “Service Above Self.”

Garcia advances to the Area Contest on April 7 in Freer.
