Thirty new tasers were recently acquired by the Alice Police Department for patrol officers as a "last resort" during certain situations.
In order, for the officers to be equipped with the tasers they first had to be trained on the updated version. The training included a lecture and a "self-test."
Officers were also trained on proficiency on reloading taser, as well as maintenance and safety features, said Sgt. Aniceto "Cheto" Perez, APD training coordinator and the Interim Police Chief.
According to Perez, the officers must understand when a taser should not be used especially with the elderly who may have health problems or pregnant women. Tasers are a tool to deter a criminal from fleeing or causing harm to the officer.
The tasers cost more than $50,000 and were approved by the Alice City Council in December of 2018.
