Seven Alice High School students competed at the Coastal Bend Regional History Day contest held Friday, February 15. Five out of the seven students, led by teacher Juan Perez, advanced to the state competition, with the other two becoming alternates.
The five students advancing to the state competition all took different paths to success. Two students reenacted the famous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Another two made a website educating people on the atomic bombs and their effects on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another student that advanced to the state level made a documentary film on the life of Vincent Van Gogh.
A website on the life of John F. Kennedy and an exhibit on LGBT rights also garnered alternate placement at the state level.
The regional history day competition took place at the Connor Museum on the campus of Texas A&M Kingsville. The students and Perez, who has taught at AHS for two years and has been in education for 18, will compete in the State History Day in Austin on April 27.
