Three local high schools are sending bands to the state UIL Mariachi Band competition. Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Premont and San Diego high schools will compete February 22 and 23 at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

BBPB High is sending their mariachi contingent Azul y Plata to their second state competition this season and their marching band also went to state this year. After the UIL competition, Azul y Plata will also be competing in the Texas Mariachi Director’s Association contest at the beginning of March, marking four state level appearances for the bands of BBPB.

Premont High School is taking their 13 member band to the state UIL competition as well. The band is led by John Flores. San Diego will also be making the trip to the valley to compete in the UIL state competition. Their Azul y Oro will be performing three selections during the state contest.
