Jim Wells County investigators suspect foul play in the death of a 28-year-old Orange Grove woman.
Investigators said a passing motorist found the body of the woman on County Road 353 just east of Orange Grove at about 8:45 a.m. Friday. An abandoned silver compact vehicle was also discovered in the area. It was later determined to belong to the victim.
The woman was identified as Melissa Arredondo, 28, of Orange Grove. Jim Wells County Sheriff Daniel J. Bueno said the woman was a mother of small children. Her family was notified of her death and the department’s investigation Friday morning.
Bueno wouldn’t elaborate but said the case is being treated as a homicide. He said he felt confident in his department's ability to close the case quickly.
“It’s a sad situation,” Bueno said. “This young lady was a mother. She was taken from her family by someone. We have our investigators deployed and I’m confident that we’ll come to a conclusion in this matter very soon.”
Bueno didn't say if investigators had a suspect in the case.
The victim was transported to the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
The homicide case is the sheriff’s department’s first in two years, deputies said.
