Knowledge in today's society is key to life's ups and downs. On Wednesday, Dec. 5, Alice Rotarians learned what 2-1-1 Texas was and how it could benefit people in the community.

Janna Shoe, 2-1-1 Texas and Coastal Bend Outreach Coordinator, spoke with the organization on what she and others with 2-1-1 do for Texas residents.

The 2-1-1 Texas goal is one day that no one will have to call 2-1-1.

2-1-1 is a resource hotline that gives callers comprehensive information and referral contacts with critical health and human service programs such as basic needs like food and shelter, physical and mental health services, job training and adult education, programs for older adults such as home-delivered meals, respite care and home health care, as well as childcare like after school programs and protective services.

2-1-1 specialists in Texas received over 53,000 calls in 2017 and average 150 calls a day, according to Shoe.

The program has been in existence since 2001.

Rotary Club of Alice meets every Wednesday at the Alice Country Club at noon. Anyone interested in the organization can meet them during a regular scheduled meeting.
