A portion of roadway between Orange Grove and U.S. Highway 281 was closed off for hours Friday morning because of an accident involving a fuel truck carrying more the 7,000 gallons of gasoline.

The accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. Friday when the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, Department of Public Safety troopers at the scene said.

The vehicle was traveling west of Farm-to-Market Road 624 about a mile from the U.S. Highway 281 intersection when the accident happened. The driver was rescued from the wrecked truck and taken to Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice with non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.

The fuel truck carrying an estimated 7,600 gallons of gasoline remained at the scene. Troopers said the truck was leaking fuel, so emergency personnel were removed from the scene and pulled back while awaiting a HAZMAT team secure the fuel.
