United Way benefit

takes place Thursday

The annual Taste fundraising event to benefit the United Way of Hays and Caldwell counties will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Railhouse, 107 E. Center St.

The event will include tastings from local restaurants, auctions and live music from former “The Voice” contestant Holly Tucker and country artist Rick Trevino.

Tickets are $75 per person and are available at unitedwayhaysco.org/taste-2018.

Huston-Tillotson hosting

environmental justice forum

Huston-Tillotson University will host a forum on environmental justice from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Scholars and activists will examine the issue from economic, political, literary, religious, scientific and technological perspectives.

The forum, "Building Green Justice: Power, Discourse and Community," is free and open to the public. It will be in the Dickey-Lawless Science Building's auditorium at the Huston-Tillotson campus, 900 Chicon St. For more information and to register, visit htu.edu.

Play For Fall fundraiser

takes place Friday

The Play For Fall fundraising event will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Play For All Park, 151 N. A.W. Grimes Blvd.

Those with special needs and their families will be able to enter the park beginning at 6 p.m. with a special needs ticket. The event will include trick-or-treating, a movie and Halloween-themed activities.

Meeting on Wednesday

for Guadalupe Street project

The Texas Department of Transportation will host an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with information on proposed improvements for Guadalupe Street.

The event will be at the Hays County Courthouse, 111 E San Antonio St., and will introduce proposed improvements for Guadalupe Street from University Drive to Grove Street. Proposed improvements include striping for bike lanes and parking, as well as sidewalk improvements between MLK Drive and the railroad tracks and bike/pedestrian crossing improvements at the tracks.

Stargazing event

Thursday at Garey Park

The city of Georgetown will host a stargazing event from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday at Garey Park, 6450 RM 2243.

Southwestern University Physics Department faculty and observers from the Williamson County Astronomy Club will be available to assist with the viewing and answer questions.

The cost is $2 for general admission, and ages 3 and younger are free. Registration is recommended at parks.georgetown.org/public-stargazing-nights.

Law school hosts

forum on gentrification

The University of Texas School of Law, at 727 E. Dean Keaton St., will host a session of its UT Opportunity Forums from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Francis Auditorium.

The free forum, “Uprooted: Lessons for Addressing Displacement in Austin's Gentrifying Neighborhoods,” will focus on the identified wave of gentrification in Austin neighborhoods, particularly in low-income African-American and Hispanic rental areas.

Camp For All seeking

votes to secure grant

Local nonprofit Camp For All is a top-three finalist in the running to receive $100,000 from Reliant in the “Reliant Gives” contest and is seeking votes to help secure the funding.

Voting can be done through Sunday at reliant.com/vote.

Camp For All helps 11,000 children and adults facing challenging physical, medical or mental conditions every year. The group’s Camp For All 2U program brings the camp’s experience to the MD Anderson Hospital for children too sick to attend camp.

Utility customers

to see new rates

Utility rates for the new fiscal year will be reflected in the city of Buda's next billing cycle.

The next utility bill will go out in late October and is due Nov. 10. Buda utility customers will see a 2 percent increase in water and a 3 percent increase in wastewater.

The city conducts its annual sewer rates averaging from November through February. The months used for averaging are the lowest water consumption months of the year. The three lowest months are averaged to get the average consumption amounts that customers are charged for the following 12 months.
