BROOKS COUNTY - A Mexican National was arrested and taken into federal custody after officers discovered 17 kilos of methamphetamine in his vehicle.

On Thursday, Sgt. Albert Martinez with the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Office Interdiction Unit was working in Brooks County as part of the sheriff coalition. At about 12:30 p.m., Sgt. Martinez conducted a traffic stop on a Subaru passenger vehicle on Highway 281.

The man's name has not been released.

During the roadside interview, the man exhibit suspicious behavior, according to sheriff officials. Sgt. Martinez called for the assistance of a K9 officer.

After an extensive search of the vehicle officers discovered the narcotics hidden.

According to sheriff officials, depending on the region the drugs have a street value between $500,000 to $700,000.

The case will be forwarded for federal prosecution.
