CORPUS CHRISTI - Benavides native Marcos Cantu graduated from the Del Mar Police Academy to become a Texas Peace Officer.
Cantu was administered the Oath of Office Thursday at a ceremony at Del Mar College making him a Deputy Sheriff for Duval County.
He was employed with the Duval County Sheriff's Office as a Correctional Officer for three years before being sponsored by the department. He was sent to the police academy.
Cantu is the sixth correctional officer sponsored to the academy under Duval County Sheriff Romeo Ramirez's administration.
"It is our goal to give an opportunity to these outstanding young men and women in becoming Texas Peace Officers and allowing them an opportunity to serve and protect our citizens of Duval County and the Great State of Texas," according to the Ramirez's Facebook page.
Cantu is the son of Valentin and Hilma Cantu of Benavides.
