Ruben Contreras was arrested Wednesday when he allegedly picked up a lost wallet and used the cash within to purchase items.
Police responded to a theft call at a business on the 200 block of North Johnson Street and met with the victim.
The victim reported that he dropped the wallet when he departed the store. The wallet had more than $1,000 as well as credit/debit cards and other identifying cards, according to police.
After noticing the wallet missing, he went back to the store and asked if it had been turned in.
No one had turned in the victim's wallet. The store's management reviewed surveillance footage with police.
Police observed Contreras picked up the wallet, remove cash, and used the cash to pay for his items.
The Criminal Investigations Division was requested. Investigators tracked Contreras to his residence.
Contreras was taken to the police department for questioning. At the station the victim confronted Contreras as he was being escorted into the station.
Contreras was transported to the Jim Wells County jail.
