For the past 20 years, San Diego native, Alex Tunchez, has taught math in the same school district he attended as a child.

On Wednesday, Alice Echo News Journal and Bowden Ford of Alice presented Alex Tunchez with the September Amazing Teacher Award in the presence of his students.

Tunchez teaches and coaches at San Diego High School and the Bernanda Jaime Junior High. He is also a firefighter with the San Diego Volunteer Fire Department.

"While he is my math teacher he is also my cross country coach. He has always believed that I and others have potential at anything we do," said Alejandra L. Trevino, Tunchez's eighth grade math student at BJJH. "Because of him I know that I can do more than what I thought for myself. He motivates me in the classroom and at my cross county practices or meets."

Tunchez received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a certification in math. Being a teacher can be a struggle, but Tunchez knows that he has to lead his students by example. He expects the best form his students and they in turn expect the best from him.

AENJ will surprise a teacher each month until May. To nominate a teacher whose made a difference in your life or child's life, you can click on the nomination Amazing Teacher button on our website at
