Premont area – A partnership between the Texas Parks and Wildlife, federal agents and the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Office confiscated several pieces of cockfighting paraphernalia along with drugs administered to the roosters during the illegal fighting.
Agents conducted several traffic stops Saturday morning near the Premont area on vehicles who were seen in the area of the illegal activity. The vehicles stopped had the illicit equipment such as knives.
“According to House Bill 1043 passed in 2011 it is illegal to have cockfights,” said JWC Sheriff Daniel Bueno. “There have been complaints filed by nearby residents and the humane society about the illegal activity.”
No arrests have been made.
“This activity will not be tolerated,” Bueno said. “Residents are very concerned about the activity and the criminal element associated with the activity. We must have a proactive approach to the concerns of the residents.”
The case is under investigation.
