Two Brownsville men, who were in possession of $97,600 were arrested by a Jim Wells County Sheriff deputy Wednesday afternoon.
Edgardo Chavez, 25, and Jose Resendez, 22, were traveling south on Highway 281 in Ben Bolt when Deputy Edward Sanchez conducted a traffic stop on the silver Chrysler passenger vehicle.
Sanchez made contact with the two men who told the officer they had been in San Antonio for work and were headed home. Through the roadside interview Sanchez received consent to search the vehicle.
According to sheriff officials, Sanchez discovered several bundles of cash inside a modified compartment in the exhaust system and several more bundles in the rear panel.
The men were booked in the JWC jail. They were both charged with money laundering more than $30,000 under $150,000. Chavez was also charged with unlawful use of criminal instrument.
Chavez's total bond was set at $52,500. Resendez has a bond of $50,000.
As of Thursday, the two men remained in county jail.
