The October Amazing Teacher award was presented to Alice High School teacher Jessica Cantu Thursday afternoon by the Alice Echo-News Journal and Edwards Furniture Co.

Cantu is in her second year teaching with the Alice ISD. She teaches ninth grade Algebra 1.

“I've wanted to be a teacher since I was in sixth grade at Dubose Intermediate,” Cantu said. “My teacher, Mr. Lerma, inspired me to teach. He brought the classroom to life and I fell in love with teaching.”

Cantu was nominated by Pastor Mathew Moreno of Church Unlimited-Alice.

“Jessica Cantu has a heart of gold and loves teaching her students! She truly has a passion for it and even though sometimes it can be hard she pushes forward because she loves her job,” Moreno wrote when he nominated Cantu. “She is a one of a kind person and very down to earth teacher. The students love her and love her methods of teaching! This is why she is an AMAZING teacher!”

Cantu acknowledges the hard work her students by posting their work in the hallway near her class so other students and teachers can see it.

“We do a lot of group work and get make sure my students are active in their education,” Cantu said.

While Cantu has only been teaching high school students for a short time she has spent several years, nine to be exact, with Amy's School of Dance.
