Duval County – Students who attend school in Duval County celebrated Red Ribbon Week in several ways from wearing red to hosting an assembly.
Law enforcement officers also visited schools to speak with children on the importance of Saying No to Drugs.”
Red Ribbon Week was organized by The National Family Partnership to provide drug awareness in 1985 after a Drug Enforcement Agent was murdered.
DEA Agent Enrique Camarena was tortured and killed in Mexico. His death had communities around the nation an uproar and began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the issues caused by drugs.
The NFP and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver Camarena's message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign, according to redribbon.org.
