Twenty-six bags of marijuana were located during a routine traffic stop on Thursday. At approximately 12:13 a.m. Cpl. Juan Martinez was on patrol when he observed the driver of a Dodge Charger fail to maintain a single lane.
Martinez activated his emergency lights and the driver, later identified as Michael Valerio Jr. stopped at a parking lot on the 1100 block of East Main Street. The officer made contact with Valerio and immediately detected an odor of marijuana.
Valerio was asked to step out of the vehicle and was patted down for officer safety. During the pat down Martinez located a pair of brass knuckles in Valerio's pocket. Valerio was arrested when he failed the sobriety exam.
As Martinez took inventory of the vehicle he located the 26 bags of marijuana inside a blue bag in the back seat and a grinder in the glove compartment.
Valerio was transported to the Jim Wells County jail. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a prohibited weapon.
