Five-year-old Salvador Rios IV and his family know the difficulties associated when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer and are giving back to their community.

Rios, is the son of Elena and Salvador Rios III, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 2. He has undergone chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant in a San Antonio Hospital. He has had two brain surgeries since his diagnosis in 2013 and has been cancer free for the past three years.

On September 3, Salvador and his family are hosting the first Childhood Cancer Awareness 5K Run to help raise awareness for the disease that affects so many children.

According to Salvador's mom, all proceeds will go towards Sal's Journey, a non-profit organization that helps other families and children with cancer.

As the organization grows Elena plans to give scholarships in Salvador's name to local students.

The deadline to register for the event is Aug. 24. Registration can be done at Get A Grip, GNC, Fit24 Gym, give.acco.org/sales5k or contact Elena Rios at 361-396-7605.
