Meridian Care of Alice received more than 100 entries in their naming contest of their upcoming secured 40-bed facility for patients who suffer from dementia and Alzheimers.

The secured building will be called the “The Drake” entered by Juan Joslin. Joslin received a $500 check for winning the contest.

The Drake is named after the family who opened up the first nursing home in Alice called Hospitality House in 1955.

Hospitality House was established when Phyl Drake, owner of The Plaza Court, came back from World War II and needed healthcare for his father, so he decided to change The Plaza Court into a nursing home.

Phyl Drake passed down his legacy to his sons: Terry, Dennis and Duane who operated the facility after his passing in 1989. They continued to operate the facility until 2008 when Meridian Care Alice purchased the facility.

The Drake, once completed, is a state of the art, one of a kind facility with 40 private rooms regardless of payer source. The facility will have three wings with private dining room, living room, courtyard, 24-hour nursing care. A secure, safe, clean environment for the residents.

Meridian Care of Alice is now accepting reservations for private rooms at the The Drake. Call 361-664-4366 and ask for Kelly Austin or Charity Webster to assist you.
