An Alice man who attempted to get a background check was arrested on Monday by Alice police officers and then walked out of the station when the arresting officer was not looking.

Joseph Michael Garza, 34, walked into Alice Police Department on the 400 block of East Main when officers where notified that he had a warrant for theft that occurred in April.

According to Officer David Valadez, Garza was being processed when he decided to walk out the front door of the department.

Valadez was the arresting officer. Garza sat behind him as the processing procedures were being done. When Valadez turned around Garza was no longer there, Valadez stated.

According to officials, Garza was able to walk out the front door which was left open due to the lunch hour.

Garza drove off in a gray passenger vehicle. Officers quickly notified law enforcement agencies in the area about Garza.

Garza was located traveling westbound on Highway 44 and US 281by Sgt. Enrique Saenz with the Alice PD and initiated a traffic stop.

Cpl. Michael Hasting with the Alice PD and Jim Wells County Deputies arrived on the scene. Garza was detained and transported back to the police department by JWC Deputy Mario Sendejo.

While doing an inventory of Garza's vehicle Hastings located synthetic marijuana, according to Valadez.

Additional charges of escape from custody and possession of a controlled substance were added to the theft warrant.

Garza remains in the county jail as of Tuesday morning with a bond set at $3,000.
