Name and rank

Deputy Jonathan Garcia

Number of years with Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department

I just started with the department. I am on my third day.

Number of years of experience total. Where?

This is my first law enforcement job. I graduated the Del Mar Police Academy in December 2015.

What made you want to be in law enforcement?

As a child I grew up around law enforcement. My uncles were officers and I felt like it was my turn to serve and protect our county and my city.

Does your family support your career choice?

Yes, my family supports me. They have been by my side since I started going to the academy through the bad times and the good times. I thank my wife, Samantha Garcia, daughter Zaylan Garcia, my parents Albert and Rosario Benavidez, my father Ricardo Garcia, and my grandparents Emilo and Jaine Garza.

What's the most rewarding part of your job?

I get to help people just as my family has done before me. Recently I went on a call where a had to help a young child who had witnessed an intoxicated person cause problems. As a father it hurt to see this child scared because of the things around her. I was able to comfort the girl as the situation was handled.

I'm from Alice and my family is here. I know that as an officer I get to patrol the streets and help keep them safe.

What do you believe is the hardest part of your job? Why?

The hardest part is not being able to be with my family as often as I'm use to, but that's part of my job. I know they understand because they know I'm out on the street helping and serving the community.
