Alice police officer was assaulted on Thursday by a 20-year-old wanted man who was seen in a 2004 Nissuan Altima.

Officer John De Leon observed Damian Rodriguez who he knew had had a warrant out of the Alice PD. He conducted a traffic stop and the vehicle came to a stop at Beckman and South Adams.

Officer John De Leon approached the vehicle and made contact with Rodriguez who was the front passenger of the vehicle.

Rodriguez stepped out of the vehicle and the officer attempted to detain him when Rodriguez pulled away. He reached for his waist band several times, report stated.

According to the police report, the suspect struck the officer in the face with his left elbow and pushed the officer against the vehicle.

The suspect ran towards South Adams. De Leon started a chase on foot as he removed his taser. Units in the area were notified of Rodriguez's possible location.

According to the report, Cpl. Nick Juarez and Officer Nick Reyes were on patrol on the 900 block of Ida Street where they intiitaed a traffic stop on a 2009 Nissan Rogue. Inside the vehicle was Rodriguez who gave the officers a false name.

Rodriguez was transported straight to the Jim Wells County jail for being combative with officers.

He was charged with the warrant for burglary of a habitation with intend other felony, assault on a public servant, resisting arrest, evading arrest and failure to identify as a fugitive from justice.

As of Friday afternoon, Rodriguez remained in the county jail with a bond totaled at $81,000.
