David Berry Hale

29, 2022 in Greenwood, South Carolina with Julie Sheldon Hale, his wife of 45 years, at his side. In addition to his wife, David leaves behind his daughters Susan Hale (Donald) Scheffler, Gail Degenhart (Brian) Moore, and Lara Degenhart (Sean) Cassidy; eight accomplished and active grandchildren: Caroline Scheffler, George Scheffler, John (Holly) Moore, Sarah Grace Moore, William Moore, Margaret Moore, Elizabeth Moore, and Catherine Cassidy; predeceased by his two brothers, Frank Hale and Jerry Hale, and a sister, Ju Laine Hale.

Consuelo G. Benavides

Consuelo G. Benavides, 78, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at an Alice Nursing home surrounded by her family. Consuelo, better known by her family as “Maestra” (Teacher), was born on June 11, 1944 in Palito Blanco, Texas to Paulino V. Gonzalez and Estela Ruiz Gonzalez. Consuelo enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved dancing, scratching her lottery tickets, watching novelas, and talking on the phone. Most of all, she loved caring for her grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving person and always full of happiness. She was a small structure woman build, but with a big heart. She will be deeply missed by family and friends as she walks through the pearly gates and arrives at her mansion in heaven. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Estela Gonzalez; the father of her children, Teofilo Benavides Sr.; a great-grandchild, Ismael Alvarez Jr. and a nephew, David Andrew Villagran. She is survived by her children: one son, Teo (Prissy) Benavides of Alice; four daughters, Rosa Linda (Sal) Arredondo of Alice, Irene (Israel) Garza of Alice, Irma (Rene) Gomez of Alice, and Cynthia (Joe) Ramirez of San Antonio; five brothers, Valdemar R. Gonzalez (Diana) of Austin, Ruben R. Gonzalez (Margie) of Alice, Conrado R. Gonzalez (Blanca) of Alice, Ricardo R. Gonzalez (Eliza) of Alice, and Arturo R. David Berry Hale

David Berry Hale, 82, resident of Alice, TX and Greenwood, SC, husband of Julie Sheldon Hale, passed away Monday, August 29, 2022, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont. Born February 20, 1940, in Arp, TX, he was a son of the late Jewell Lawrence “Jude” Hale and Thelma Odessa Covington Hale Glass.

Jose Maria “Pepe” Vela

Jose Maria “Pepe” Vela was born in Alice, Texas on March 10, 1922, to John H. Vela and Zoila Salazar. As a child he grew up in Alice. He had a younger sister, Corinne. When he was eight years old, the family moved to Falfurrias, Texas where his parents worked as educators on the Lasater Ranch. Several years later the family moved back to Alice where Jose continued his education. He graduated from Alice High School in 1940. During the early 1940’s he worked as an auto mechanic’s helper. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Army Air Force and worked as an airplane mechanic. Jose was honorably discharged in 1945 at the end of World War II. Jose received the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. After service to his country, Jose attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas where he received his bachelor’s degree in Education. He began his teaching career in Hebbronville, Texas and after a few years returned to Alice. There he met the love of his life Emma Gonzalez. After a brief courtship they were married on July 28, 1957. They had two sons, John Alexander, and Jose Humberto. During his summers off, Jose worked with his father as a cotton salesman. Jose’s teaching career spanned over thirty-five years. After retirement, he continued to be involved with school activities, such as a ticket collector at local school football and basketball games. Jose was also involved with local elections as an election clerk. He began raising cattle in 1985. While retired, he and his wife Emma enjoyed travelling across the U.S. to various casinos. Many of the places they visited included Las Vegas, Reno, Laughlin, Lake Tahoe, Coushatta, Kickapoo, and Tunica. Jose was a simple man with lots of patience. His motto was “Don’t worry about it!”. Perhaps this was the key to his long, fruitful life. He is preceded in death by his Parents, sister Corinne Vela Pennock and son Jose
