This past week, I taught Summer Bird Camp at Gulf Coast Bird Observatory. But honestly, with all of the spider-loving kids in the group, it should’ve been called Summer Spider Camp. Even the children who started out as arachnophobes were asking to hold spiders by the end of the week. Every time we went outside, we found tons of awesome spiders to look at. Hacienda Ford of Alice held an event on Saturday, June 11 with Majic 104.9, Neighbors Offering Animals Hope (NOAH) and TE Prosperity Insurance Agency. The event helped raise awareness and funds for NOAH who provide hope for animals around the Coastal Bend.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar today released his agency’s Texas Broadband Plan to support the expansion of broadband access for underserved and unserved Texans. The Comptroller’s Broadband Development Office (BDO) crafted the plan building upon the feedback that Hegar and BDO staff collected from Texans through 12 public town halls, 60 virtual regional roundtable discussions and more than 16,000 survey responses.

SAN DIEGO - In the last two weeks the 229th Judicial District Attorney’s Office secured two guilty pleas on child sex crimes that received lengthy prison sentences. In Duval County, Eduardo Garza pled to 30 years prison time and, in Starr County, Mario Antonio Guerra in Starr County, pled to the maximum punishment of 20 years prison time.
EDINBURG – This week, Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Border Patrol agents encountered 512 migrants in three large groups and disrupted a human stash house. Over the last 48 hours, RGV agents encountered three large groups totaling 512 migrants in Starr and Hidalgo Counties.
Workforce Solutions Coastal Bend has once again secured funding for the Texas Internship Initiative (TII) and Pursuit of Advance Training in High-demand Skills (PATHS) Grants to fund amazing opportunities to our Coastal Bend Youth! In partnership with Education to Employment Partners, these grants will help fund the Emerging Professional Program by bringing customer-based training and forming connections to the local workforce.
On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, to fund locally-led conservation projects to prevent wildlife from becoming endangered. If the bill is also passed by the U.S. Senate, Texas will receive around $50 million per year to help more than 1,200 species of concern, including Texas Horned Lizards, Guadalupe Bass, and Bobwhite Quail.
