Beach-nesting bird season continues along the upper Texas Coast and Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is continuing to monitor birds on Matagorda Beach and Sargent Beach. We are focused on Wilson’s Plovers and Least Terns which are protected by the Migratory Bird Act and are considered species of high concern due to habitat loss and disturbance. Most of the birds have finished nesting at this point but there are still chicks running around so please be cautious when visiting the beach and make sure to give them plenty of space. Along with the Wilson’s Plover and Least Tern, we have observed other breeding shorebirds as well such as Blacknecked Stilt.

Submitted FALFURRIAS – Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Border Patrol agents rescued a Guatemalan citizen snakebite victim near Falfurrias. On July 17, at approximately 11:00 p.m., RGV agents apprehended a group of five migrants unlawfully in the U.S.

CORPUS CHRISTI – For Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s Skylar Moring, RN, taking excellent care of babies is a personal matter. Skylar, who has been a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse at Driscoll Children’s Hospital for two years, credits her parents for her career choice.

The San Diego man accused of murdering two young women on July 1 was recently charged with the endangerment of a child - criminal negligence. As of Tuesday morning, 42-year-old Alejandro Lopez of San Diego remains in the Jim Wells County jail and has a total bond of $2,536,500.

Jacob Wayne Arriola of Alice recently pled guilty on 2016 charges that involved a child. On July 5, Arriola was sentenced to 12 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice - Institutional Division.

EDINBURG – Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Border Patrol agents arrested three convicted criminal migrants and seven gang members over the last few days. On July 11, Falfurrias Border Patrol Station agents processed a Salvadoran national Mara-Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang member.
