The Church of the Overcomer is having their first-ever Vacation Bible School this year. The church has been in Alice for about four years and weren’t able to host one.
On Thursday, Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa was appointed to the Senate Special Committee to Protect All Texans. The committee is charged with studying five areas: school safety, mental health, social media, police training, and firearm safety. Senator Hinojosa issued the following statement:
Oscar Caesar Lozano, 44, went to his heavenly home on June 1, 2022. Surrounded by his precious family and his brothers and sisters in Christ. He will be deeply missed by those that loved him. He loved fellowshipping with anyone that wanted to speak about our Lord.
Robert Torrez Jr., 55 years of age, passed away on June 2, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. Robert was born on November 17,1966 in Italy, Texas to Robert and Eloise Lopez Torrez. He worked as a Rig Supervisor for Axis Energy Services. He was a Dallas Cowboy fan, he loved gambling and Bingo. He always enjoyed being with his family and friends. He had a passion for Barbecuing. Robert worked in the oilfield industry for 38 years. Robert will be remembered by many people that he helped and loved. He was always wanting to help and do for others. Robert was an avid supporter of his nephew Marcos’s horseraces.
Juan Alaniz, age 61, passed away May 25, 2022 in Orange Grove, Texas. He was born October 22, 1960 in Mathis, Texas to Antonio Alaniz Sr. and Ester Perez Alaniz. Juan enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and enjoying his time outside with his adult beverages on the front porch. He was known to many in the neighborhood for running errands for everyone and playing pranks on his brother. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Maria Belen Salinas, age 85, passed into eternal rest Sunday, June 5, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by her family after a long illness. She was born on June 8, 1936, in Rios, Texas to her parents Damas and Maria Rodriguez. Belen resided in Alice, Texas most of her life, and lived in Laredo a short time later in life. A true hard worker, she was a retired Deputy Clerk with Jim Wells County. Belen was the best cook, and she knew it, she loved throwing a good BBQ for family and friends. She gave the best advice and at times demanded you follow it, but it came from years of knowledge and love. She lived her life to the fullest and is dancing in the sky reunited with the love of her life.
The Rising Stars Lady Coyote Basketball Camp began Monday at the Alice High School gym. The camp is being led by Lady Coyote baseball coach Mari Santos and her staff.
Hundreds of young track and field athletes filled Memorial Stadium for the annual Alice Independent School District Summer Track and Field program’s meet early Friday. The meet included young athletes from all around South Texas ages 12 and under.
