Alice High School seniors Janelle Castillo and Jonavan Lopez had a busy year.

Combined, they covered nearly every sport at Alice High School from August to late spring, and for their efforts they were awarded the school’s highest athletic honor. The two were named the school’s top athletes at the Alice Coyote Spring Sports Banquet Thursday night at the K.C. Hall.

Castillo won the honor after a year in which she was a standout in cross country, basketball, powerlifting and track and field. Lopez was a standout in football, basketball, soccer, baseball and track and field.

Castillo was part of the girls cross country team which was third in district and advanced to the regional meet. Castillo contributed by placing 28th in the 30-5A meet. In basketball, Castillo was a starter and a key contributor to helping the Lady Coyotes return to the state playoffs.

Castillo then got herself to the state powerlifting meet and ended up taking fourth place in the 123-pound weight class. She helped the Lady Coyotes with a third-place team trophy.

Her year ended as a regional qualifier in track and field.

Lopez led the district in interceptions this football season as a starting defensive back. His effiorts helped him earn a spot on the New Mexico Highlands University football program is in Las Vegas, NM. He’ll start attending the university in August.

Lopez then was a part of the Coyotes’ basketball, soccer and baseball teams. He again was a big-time standout in track and field and advanced to regionals in the high jump.

Castillo and Lopez were also named to a handful of all-academic teams throughout the school year.
