SAN DIEGO — Midway through the District 31-3A season, San Diego is all alone atop of the standings. They’re dominated through the first half and Friday night was no different.

The Lady Vaqueros easily took care of Falfurrias and won, 65-19.

Ironically, coach Alex Tunchez credited the win against Falfurrias to a poor quarter the team played Tuesday night. Playing against Banquete Tuesday night, the San Diego girls scored only one point in the first quarter. They came back and outscoring the Lady Bulldogs the rest of the way, but it was enough for Tunchez to refocus on fundamentals in practice late in the week.

“We struggled in that quarter against Banquete,” Tunchez said. “We just weren’t ourselves. We struggled and we weren’t clicking.”

Against Falfurrias, the Lady Vaqueros returned to basic basketball.

“We looked a lot better tonight,” he said. “We looked a lot fresher. We slowed things down and we came out and played better.”

The end result was a solid offensive night in which all but one of the girls on the roster scored at least two points. Marley Martinez led the team with 15. Leandra Bazan had 10.

Falfurrias 53, San Diego 43

The game between the San Diego Vaqueros and Falfurrias was a hard-fought back-and-forth match. It was so heated that at one point two Falfurrias fans were tossed from the gym in San Diego.

However, when the game was over, the Vaqueros were on the short end of a 53-43 decision.
