SAN DIEGO — Sometimes offense can be the best defense.
That was the case Friday on the opening night of District 31-3A. With the Lady Vaqueros on the offensive for most of the game, there was little Santa Gertrudis Academy could do.
When it was all done, the San Diego girls had put up 81 points in a lobsided 81-30 victory. It was the most points the San Diego girls had scored in a single game this season.
San Diego coach Alex Tunchez was impressed with the team’s offensive output, but he said simply winning the district game was the most important of the night.
“Starting district 1-0 is definitely much better than starting 0-1,” said Tunchez who is in his first season as the Lady Vaqueros’ head coach. “It’s a five-team district so every win is really important. Plus, winning like we did is good for the girls. It makes them feel good.”
It was a complete night for the Lady Vaqueros. Everyone on the team’s 12-player roster scored at least two points. Marley Martinez led the group with 17 points. Kayla Oliveira scored 11.
San Diego came out running offensively and pressing defensively. It made for an easy evening for the Lady Vaqueros. They jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the first period. By halftime, the Lady Vaqueros were out ahead, 43-18.
The Lady Vaqueros are on the court again Tuesday at Bishop High School.
